My first SMART Goal was learning 10-15 sign language words that can help a child communicate needs in the classroom. I was able to learn 12 sign language parses/ words. I was also only able to implement a few within the classroom I was completing my placement in. Some of the obstacles when completing this goal was that I wish I learnt the sign language alphabet first. This was the case because for example the sign language for the parse “I Love You” it’s the letters I, L, and U combined. Therefore without reading that I wish I was able to make that connection on my own. I learnt my 12 parses by watching videos online as well as I took out books from the library and learnt a few from them. Accomplishing this goal can help me as a future EA because for children who are nonverbal they may know these words already, or I can teach it to them in order to make communicating easier for them. I can also implement these in my classroom if I am working in one this way all children are learning the parses and using them may be beneficial for them as well.
Process
These are the variety of books I used from the Library to help me learn and incorporate 12 phrases of ASL.
